Clients want emissions by project. Your bills don't arrive that way.

Fuel cards, power accounts and waste dockets are billed to the company, while head contractors, developers and government clients ask about one job. Emitt files each record against the project it belongs to and keeps the source document behind every figure.

Who's asking a construction business for its emissions?

Mostly your clients. Head contractors, developers and government agencies need emissions for the projects they run, so they ask the businesses doing the work, often in the tender and again during the job.

  • Head contractors and developers. Their reports include the emissions of the subcontractors and suppliers on their jobs. Large ones reporting under AASB S2 must include Scope 3 from their second reporting year, and your work on their projects is part of it.
  • Australian Government construction tenders. Since 1 July 2024, the Commonwealth's Environmentally Sustainable Procurement (ESP) Policy has applied to construction services procurements of $7.5 million or more. Successful tenderers report at the start of the contract, every six months and at the end, using actual data rather than estimates, and must collect what they need from subcontractors.
  • Green Star and IS ratings. Under the ESP Policy, a project reports against either a sustainability rating, such as Green Star or an Infrastructure Sustainability (IS) rating depending on the type of construction, or a set of base metrics. A rating means keeping documentation and providing evidence for it.
  • Your own reporting. A company large enough to report under AASB S2 discloses its own Scope 1 and 2 from its first year. A business with a lot of plant can also cross an NGER threshold; whether it does is for you and your advisers to decide.

Where a construction business's emissions come from

These are the sources Emitt prices today, the scope each falls in, and how the records reach Emitt. Scope 3 is reported apart from the Scope 1 and 2 headline.

Emission sourceScopeHow the data reaches Emitt
Diesel in plant, generators and site vehiclesScope 1Fuel card export (Ampol Card today; BP Plus and Shell Card coming soon), or bulk deliveries in a spreadsheet
Petrol in utes and light vehiclesScope 1Fuel card export or spreadsheet upload
LPG for site heaters and forkliftsScope 1Supplier invoices, uploaded in the template or entered by hand
Refrigerant topped up in site office air conditioningScope 1Service records of the gas added, in kg, uploaded or entered by hand
Electricity for site sheds, temporary supply, yards and officesScope 2Bills from any retailer, in the spreadsheet template or entered by hand
Waste to landfill from skips and binsScope 3Waste contractor docket reports (CSV)
Subcontractors' own emissions on your jobScope 3A supplier link: each one reports their own figure, no account needed

What Emitt doesn't calculate for construction. Embodied emissions in concrete, steel and other materials, waste diverted from landfill or recycled (Emitt records waste to landfill only), recycled content, and travel. That puts the ESP Policy's base metrics outside what Emitt calculates. Subcontractor figures are recorded as reported, never estimated.

How Emitt fits a construction business

Set it up the way you already run the business, then let each record find its project.

Projects, depots, fleet and office

Set up projects, yards and the head office as your own tree. Every figure rolls up from the project to the company, and a finished project keeps its records for the client who asks next year.

Fuel lands on the job that burnt it

Turn on Ampol Card in each project or depot with the cards that belong to it, and upload that job's export there. Every transaction keeps its card, vehicle and fuel site as the statement showed them.

Subcontractor data without the chasing

Send each subcontractor a personal link for the project and month you need. They report their own emissions and can attach a statement without creating an account. Emitt sends the reminders, and a tracker shows who has replied.

Numbers ready for the tender

Pull a project's Scope 1 and 2 summary, with its Scope 3 alongside, for a tender response or a client report. Each total says how many records it includes and leaves out, with the source documents behind it.

How to calculate the emissions from diesel on a project

Multiply the quantity of diesel by its emission factor: 18.6 kL (18,600 litres) of diesel × 2,709.72 kg CO₂e per kilolitre in the NGA Factors 2026 = 50,400.79 kg, or 50.40 t CO₂e of Scope 1.

Emitt shows this working on every record and applies the NGA edition that matches the activity's date. Try your own figures in the emissions calculator.

Questions construction businesses ask

Can Emitt report emissions for a single project?

Yes. Every record belongs to a project, site or depot in your company's tree, and Emitt reports each one on its own, by month or for the whole job, with its Scope 3 shown alongside the Scope 1 and 2 total.

How do subcontractors give me their emissions?

You send each subcontractor a personal link for the project and month you need. They report their own emissions in tonnes CO₂e as their records show it, can attach a statement, and don't need an Emitt account. Emitt records the figure as reported and never estimates it.

Does Emitt calculate embodied carbon in concrete and steel?

No. Emitt calculates emissions from the fuel, electricity, gas, refrigerants and waste to landfill your business is responsible for, and records the emissions subcontractors and suppliers report. Embodied emissions in materials need a separate tool or your suppliers' environmental product declarations.
